I am very grateful to Andrew Marshall, who has contributed this article about the three Appleton Brothers of The Stoep, Fairby Lane, all of whom were pilots in WW2.  Karl joined the Fleet Air Arm but was killed in action on an anti-shipping raid near Palermo, Sicily in 1943.  Llewellyn was a Hurricane pilot lost in the defence of France in 1940.  The third brother James, survived the war and later became an attache, but he had to survive three years in a Japanese POW camp after being captured in the fall of Singapore.
