For centuries most of the land that one day would become Kent Road and Essex Road was part of the Longfield Court estate.  In the 1840s this was a large 31 acre field called Barn Field which stretched from Hartley Road to Fawkham Road.  In addition a strip of land, about 120 feet wide, at the Fawkham Road end belonged to Salts Farm.  

Kent Road looking west towards Fawkham RoadLongfield Court was owned for nearly a thousand years by the Archdeacons of Rochester.  An archdeacon is a church official second in seniority to a bishop, with responsibility for part of a diocese.  There was a major reorganization of the Archdeaconry in 1859-1863, and it seems as a result, the Longfield Court estate was put up for sale in 8 lots in 1865 by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners.  Essex Road formed part of lot 5, being 16 acres. This consisted of all the land bounded by Main Road, Station Road, the Railway and Salts Farm.  The buyer was the Gravesend brewer, George Wood senior.  In 1869 he added Salts Farm to his holdings.  His son George Wood junior put the land between Station Road and Fawkham Road, together with Whitehill Road, on the market in 1881 [Maidstone Journal 6.6.1881] and sale was completed for £2,500 on Christmas Eve 1883.

The buyer was a Gravesend firm called The Kent and Essex House Land and General Investment Company.    They had only been founded in 1883 with the purpose of buying land to build houses and shops upon, or to sell off as plots.

Kent Road - Fairbourne Villas and Kent VillasEssex Road and Kent Road do not appear on the 1895 Ordnance Survey map, so we can assume Kent Road was laid out some time between then and the first house in about 1900.  The 1907 Ordnance Survey map shows that the road then did not run as far as Fawkham Road, as the last section is just marked as a footpath.  The same map shows the earliest houses to be built were numbers 11, 41, 45-51 (odd) and 52-54 (even), so for a long while it wasn't quite as developed as Essex Road.  By 1927 Longfield Village Hall had been built in Kent Road, where number 40 is today.

Originally the road had named houses, numbering occurred about 1957.

Streetlighting was definitely here before 1963, when 2 additional lighting columns were added by the Parish Council.

An aerial photograph of Essex Road in 1960 shows only 2 cars parked on the road.  Things had changed by 1967 sufficiently for parking restrictions to be introduced at the Station Road end (the London Gazette had a similar proposal in 1962, but no evidence it was adopted).  The problem of commuter parking led to restrictions between 7am and 10am in the rest of the road in 1971.
