About the Road

Hartley Kent: Pitfield - entrance to road
Pitfield - entrance to road (2020)

Pitfield was built in 1976 as part of the development of the Wellfield estate.  It is probably named for the former chalk pit (where Caxton Close is now) which the road leads toward.  Numbers 23A - 23D were built in 2006, formerly there had been a car park for 22 cars there, this was replaced by the 4 houses and 14 parking spaces.

Hartley Kent: Former car park, now 23A - 23D Pitfield (2005)

Historically, the future Pitfield was   part Blue   House Farm being split between two fields that date back to at least the 17th century called "Care Hill" and "Huttocks".  This farm   burnt down in 1851; the house Mintmakers in Church Road was built in its place.

Most of the land bounded by Quakers  Close, Ash Road, Church Road and Woodland Avenue was acquired by a firm  of London Estate Agents, Payne,Trapps & Co Limited, in 1905.  They  named the land the "Fawkham Park Estate" and laid out roads.  Payne and   Trapps sold off the land in 25 foot plots.  Their road layout for the land that became the Wellfield Estate was substantially different.  Most of the future Pitfield lay on an extended Merton Avenue, or a lost road called Porchester Crescent (now commemorated in Porchester Close, but the modern road is not where the Payne and Trapps road was). Few of the original purchasers built houses but very few houses were built and the land became under used.  In both  wars the government used emergency powers to plough the land for the war effort.  Numbers 1-15 odd are built on a block  of 10 plots bought for £126 in 1907 by William Clinch (1846-1911), a  surveyor from Rosherville near Gravesend. It appears the land was still in the hands of his  executors when the council acquired it in about 1960.

The  development of the land was complicated by the existence of individual  plot owners, many of whom could not be traced.  Dartford Rural Council  intended council housing to be located here as early as 1954 when they  granted themselves planning permission to build here.  They did not  intend to develop immediately but it put a block on private landowners  who may have wished to build a house on their plot.

Information about the houses
Explanation:
1. Date of Construction is sometimes approximate.
2. Plot histories include the ancient farms and fields with the earliest known  date, also the name of the smallholding sold by   Smallowners Limited at the beginning of the 20th century.
3. Planning Permissions include the reference number, so more details can be seen at Sevenoaks Council.
4. Before Council Tax the tax on residential property was called  the rates.  The registers for 1956, 1963 and 1972 are  held at Sevenoaks Council.  The rateable value given is the gross estimated rental value of the property, that is how much  the Valuation Office  thought people would pay to rent it for a year, the  rates were  actually calculated on a lower value after certain statutory  allowances were made.  For some reason the 1956 register contains  the rateable value for the  properties as it would  have been in  1939.
5. Council  tax is based on what the Valuation Office  thought the property would have sold for in 1993.  It is divided  into 8 value bands.
