Hartley Road

Longfield > Roads
Hartley Road is the ancient road linking Longfield and Hartley.  Historically the road extended to the old boundary of Longfield at Bramblefield Close, so the house Bramblings had a Hartley Road address.  Nowadays Ash Road seems to have been extended to the Railway Bridge or even the junction with Station Road.

In 1915 Hartley Road was widened.  A dispute arose in 1923 as to who was responsible for fixing the railway steps which were out of repair.  Longfield Parish Council had to pay for the works.  The road was mentioned again in the council minutes in 1930 when complaints were received that a fence being erected was blocking sight lines at the junction with Main Road.  The following year Station Road was extended from the Station to join up with Hartley Road, the junction was one of the first places chosen for streetlighting in 1932.

The zebra crossing was added in the 1990s.  Certain safety improvements around the juntion with Station Road, including anti-skid surfacing and improved signage were completed at a cost of £16,300 in 2006.  Some concerns were raised about safety in 2019 after 4 people were struck that year by cars while crossing.  Mini roundabouts or pelican crossings have been proposed, but nothing has changed yet.  Surprisingly, given its proximity to the station, the road does not have yellow lines.

The oldest house is probably Pond Cottage (no 1), which from map evidence would appear to date to between 1840 and 1864, although it is difficult to be sure as it wasn't called Pond Cottage until the 20th century.  Next to be built in 1885 were the Victorian semi-detached "Court Villas" (12-26 even).  They were advertised as "Country Apartments - Large dining, drawing and bedrooms, with two smaller bedrooms and one dressing room, near a town, post and church - to let, together or separately...." (The Field 5.12.1885).
