These three roads were built in 1956 on land to the east of Hartley Road and north of the railway.  

Historically the land was mostly part of Longfield Court, but a number of properties, namely 28-44 St Mary's Way, 6&8 Oakwood Rise and 1-13 (odd) Dene Walk were part of a 24 acre holding in Hartley parish called Hottsfield.  Indeed while the civil parish boundary was corrected to run along the railway line in the early 1950s, the ecclesiastical parish never has been changed (see Church of England Parish Map).   When the railway was built in 1860 it cut through Hottsfield and it seems the Longfield portion was incorporated into the Longfield Court lands.  In 1955 there were no title deeds to the Hottsfield land, it was sold on the basis of adverse possession (squatter's rights) by the owners of Longfield Court for at least 40 years.

For centuries Longfield Court had been owned by the Archdeacons of Rochester, but the Ecclesiastical Commissioners sold it in 1866.  In 1891 it was bought Adelaide Hickmott, wife of John Joseph Hickmott (the tenant of Longfield Court) with her own money.  She died in 1932 and her descendants sold the St Mary's Way land to Cooper Estates for £3,350 in 1955.

Like most roads in Longfield, parking has become an issue.  In an article entitled "Choked by Cars", the Kent Messenger in 1974 reported: "Residents at St Mary's estate have petitioned Longfield Parish Council, complaining about obstructions by parking in their roads.  They say near accidents have been caused by non-residents parking on corners.  Driveways have been blocked and an ambulance was delayed by the parking.  Householders in Main Road, who do not have garages or spaces for their cars, are using the estate roads to park.  They want restrictions on garden parking to be relaxed and hard standings to be installed." (Maidstone Telegraph 25.1.1974)

Under the Kent County Council (Various Roads, Longfield) (Prohibition of Waiting) Order 1975, parking restrictions between 7am and 10am on weekdays were imposed.  It seems this merely pushed the problem further east, as the following year St Mary's Way and Langafel Close were added to the parking restrictions (Kent County Council (Various Roads Longfield) (Prohibition of Waiting) Order 1976).
